Clinging on

Psalm 63:8

"I cling to you; your strong right hand hand holds me securely"

Snickers have a funny ad going at the moment. There is a climber apparently climbing up a vertical rock wall - then he slips and screams for help, clinging on.

The camera then rotates to show he is actually on a horizontal surface and in no danger at all!!

Isn't this so often how we are? We're clinging on to God as if we will fall into the abyss if we let go but, if we change our perspective, we find He has us safe in His hand all along.

How do we change our perspective?

Be still and know that He is God

Stop clinging, flailing and screaming because that just makes you harder to hold

Make a conscious effort to stop worrying and, instead, bring it before the Lord who has pledged eternal love and care for you, bring it with thanksgiving for who He is, all He has done and all He will do - then let the peace of God which passes all understanding fill your heart and mind with the knowledge and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then, in faith, you will come to the point where you can say "Your strong right hand holds me securely"

Just an afterthought here - the right hand is the one which would hold the sword. If God's right  hand is occupied by you, He is protecting you and not fighting against you.

Be blessed

Why did Jesus remain silent before Pilate?

Here's a thought for Good Friday - Why did Jesus remain silent before Pilate?

He could have used this encounter to have a great discussion about the One True God, about the Jewish scriptures, maybe to perform a miracle which would convince Pilate. But he did none of these things.

I wonder if Pilate was secretly quite pleased to have the chance to personally interview this enigmatic, influential, itinerant preacher about  whom he had heard all the stories. It must have been quite frustrating that, on the one hand, Jesus didn’t seem to be at all swayed by the authority of Pilate and, on the other hand, that Jesus refused to either engage in discussion or refute the charges against him.

Isaiah prophesied that this was the way it would happen - one could cynically argue that Jesus was simply aware of the prophecy and acting accordingly but considering the torture he was facing this would seem unlikely if he was a fraud. But I'm not cynical and I believe in Jesus!

So after thinking about this for a while I have come to the conclusion that one reason Jesus remained silent was that He was guilty and had no plea bargain to offer. Shock, horror what do I mean by that!

He was guilty of OUR sin and shame. He bore all OUR iniquities. There was no justifying plea that he could offer. He took it all on himself, everything WE deserve, so that WE can go free. The perfect, sinless Son of God gave up everything He had, became fully human, and took on every failure, every sin that separates us from God, and paid the ultimate price - for us.

There was no way He could stand before Pilate tell him all that because He would then have been elevating Himself above our wretched, fallen human condition, and then the sacrifice wouldn't have meant anything. He had to be one of us.

The really awesome thing is that, after all this, He allows us to choose whether or not to believe.

Greater love has no man than that he lay down his life for his friends - and He calls us His friends.

You're not you when you're hungry

The Snickers advert puts this across brilliantly.

"You're not you when you're hungry" is something we all recognise to the point where a new word has been invented - HANGRY

Can't think straight.

Mental and physical fatigue

Tetchy

No concentration

Unpleasant to be with

Self-preservation kicks in

As Christians we can draw the parallels - we're not us, as in God's original purpose and design, if we're starved of the bread of life, the refreshment He offers, the pure living water, the Word of God.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made, knitted together in our mother's womb, lovingly designed before the beginning of time to be who He predestined us to be, to do the works He preordained us to do. Then prepared and positioned according to His perfect plan. Should we choose to accept it our mission is ............

So we might be able to fast this Heavenly refreshment for a while but unless we come back to our very source of life we can never achieve who He has designed us to be.

Think about it.

When faced with the inevitable trials that this fallen world throws at us, we have a choice. Face them in our own strength with all the limitations and uncertainties involved, or face life as a Child of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit who indwells the Christian, trusting in His almighty power which is the same as that which raised Jesus from death.

Psalm 23 expresses this in different ways as you work through the text - rich pastures, still waters, following, trusting the Good Shepherd through good times and difficult ones, all the time getting closer to the time when we see Him face-to-face.

No prizes for placing all the quotes! 😉

Have a blessed day

Running at the right pace

My previous blog was called "While I was Running" and contained lots of "big thoughts" most often thought whilst I was, well, running. Then I stopped running (long story) and the blog sort of drifted off into old-blog-land.

Now I'm trying to run again and found the Couch to 5K app very useful in terms of how to build up the training, how to breathe, how to set the pace. My trainer was Laura and she would constantly advise and encourage during the run.

Having achieved 5K (absolute maximum distance!!) I then would often listen to something else such as inspirational teaching or worship music.

Then the bad weather arrived and running went on hold for a bit, as did other fitness training - with the inevitable result.

So, back into it, I started again and started listening to fantastic sermons by Alistair Begg (Truth for Life - highly recommended) - however the running seemed really hard and I was getting a bit despondent at the thought that maybe I was too old to try and get fit.

That was until yesterday when I swapped Alistair for my favourite worship tracks and managed a lot better. Then towards the end of the run when I was getting really tired and having to dig deep as they say, the chorus "It is well with my soul" just happened to be playing. Also, I ran at a better pace, in time with the music, so lasted longer.

Now I don't believe in coincidences and the juxtaposition of my physical state with the words in my ears made me think. This is what I thought:

1 It's really important to run at the right pace - in all of life, not just in fitness training.
2 We can get excited by inspirational teaching and rush off in our own strength, or too fast.
3 Worship is really important - it keeps us in tune and in time with the Lord.

Happy running

A Prayer

Father, thank you for having a plan for my life before I was even born.

Thank you for being at work in every unseen detail of my life.

I am so grateful that I get to go through life with you alongside me.

Please show me how you are shaping my life for your glory and my good.

Help me to become an active participant in Your Kingdom.

I ask this in Jesus' name.

Amen

Good but not safe

This is how Aslam the lion is described by C S Lewis, and is the allegorical description of Jesus.

Along with, hopefully, all other born-again believers, I want to experience a closer relationship with this God whom I worship, but do I know what that means? Really?

In human terms, "a closer relationship" brings to mind a pleasant experience of love, affection, a sharing of hopes and desires, maybe a physical closeness depending on the type of relationship. But who is this God we seek to approach? In asking the question I don't claim to have all the answers, but having recently read through the first few books of the Old Testament I feel the need for caution.

In the New Testament we find Jesus who is God and who is approachable. We read passages about love, affection, peace, joy, healing, provision, freedom from worry, salvation for all without cost - all very attractive reasons for choosing this god over others who demand more. To our western thinking where the individual is key, where prosperity and ease are the goals, we can distort the true nature of God by concentrating only on the "nice bits"

If this is where we're at we face the danger of coming unstuck big-time when things get tough. People ask "where is god now?", "How could a good god let this happen?", "Where are my blessings?", "Where is the healing and prosperity?"

Maybe our vision of God needs to expand to include what he shows of himself before he revealed the plan for salvation through Jesus.

Adam and Eve met the God who banished them from paradise for eating the wrong fruit. Noah met the God who wiped out the worlds population to start again with a faithful family. Moses met the God who spoke out of burning bushes, delivered plagues to Egypt, shielded Moses in the cleft of a rock so that he wouldn't fry Moses as he passes by, the god who caused the earth to open and swallow thousands of Israelites, the God who commanded rituals, blood sacrifices, glorious tabernacles, who gave detailed laws on who could approach and how it was to be done ........ I could go on but this God doesn't seem very cuddly!

We must learn about and try to understand this side of the nature of God before we can appreciate the enormity of what Jesus has done for us. Unless we grasp the eternal gulf that is between sinful man and the perfect, holy God we will never really appreciate that from which we are saved. Unless we take on board the fact that we are entering His eternal kingdom and not that He is simply bowing down to ours we will get stuck in some sort of distorted prosperity gospel.

God is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control. He is good, perfect, holy. This is his nature, not a lifestyle choice. We can truly approach him only on his terms. Yes he longs for fellowship with us as his beloved creation, but we need to understand the cost. We need to understand why Jesus alone was the only one who could bridge the gap.

Let us be careful to approach Him as He has revealed Himself, and not invent our own God from the best bits as we see them.

Let us be careful to discover more about this God who loves us with passion we could hardly even imagine, this God who we will one day meet as either judge or saviour, this God who is good but not safe.

Slaves yet free

The phrase "freedom in bondage (slaves) to Christ" appeared in something I read recently. For those who've been around church for a while, this might make sense but to many it will seem confusing, even a bit daft. You'd think the terms "free" and "slaves" don't belong together.

Definition of a slave: (i)A person who is the property of and wholly subject to another and forced to provide unpaid labour. (ii)A person entirely under the domination of some influence or person.

I felt the need to sit and consider this matter further, to be able to break this phrase down into something which might make more sense

So the word "slave" generally has negative connotations in the usually accepted sense since it implies coercion. However the quality of life of a slave necessarily depends on the character of the owner. Let's ask a few questions about being a slave to Christ. .

Q: If I am a slave, who owns me?

A: Jesus

Q: There is a cost to buying a slave - what did I cost?

A: He paid with His life - nothing else was valuable enough.

Q: Why did He do that?

A: Because He has loved me since before time began

Q: Again, Why?

A: Because otherwise my sin would condemn me to death unless the penalty, price, cost was paid. Jesus paid for that - a life for a life, so that I can spend eternity with him. (Another strange concept - He died, yet lives for ever. The tomb was empty because He had risen)

Q: So He says He owns me - what if I don't want to be owned by anyone but myself?

A: That's where the freedom bit comes in - despite the fact that I cost Him His life, He still allows me to choose whether or not to submit to that, whether or not to accept that I belong to Him.

Q: If I decide that it's OK for Jesus to own me, is there then a set of rules to obey? And what's the punishment for not obeying?

A: The only rules Jesus ever said were (i) that we love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, and (ii) that we love our neighbour as ourselves. There is no direct penalty for failing, only that we move ourselves out of close fellowship with Him. We only need to repent and turn back to find Him waiting for us.

Q: What are the benefits for me here and now?

A: Freedom! Freedom from the enemy of our souls (Satan), freedom from the bondage of sin, freedom to be who I am created to be.

So I conclude that I am bought with the blood of Jesus who sacrificed Himself to purchase my freedom - before that I was a slave to the prince of this world (Satan) whether or not I was aware of that fact. There is no middle ground. It's one or the other. Denying the existence of God and of Satan doesn't make either of them go away. Because of what He did, Jesus technically owns me but leaves me free to choose whether or not to submit to that fact.

As for me, I chose Him a long time ago and have never regretted it. I look forward to spending eternity in the presence of my Lord, Master, Saviour, Brother, Friend - starting now

Micah 6:8 "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God".

I thought of this verse whilst meditating on the Verse of the Day from my phone app. The verse was 1 Peter 5:6

"If you bow low in God’s awesome presence, he will eventually exalt you as you leave the timing in his hands".

These verses demand some self-examination regarding our attitude towards God. For example, how often have we prayed,"God, if you will do.......... for me, then I will ............" (You can fill in the blanks).

Please know that our Sovereign Lord, gracious, merciful and loving God does not perform for favours. Oh we might dress it up as laying out a fleece (as in Giddeon), or looking for guidance, but let us be very careful we are not trying to bargain with God.

Another worldly thought that can result in a creeping resentment towards God might be, "God I've been really good at/faithful in.........so surely I deserve ..............When do I get my reward?"

We must be very careful to understand that our salvation is through Jesus alone, His death in our place, His resurrection and His eventual return. We can do nothing to earn it, God can't love us anymore than He does. It doesn't depend on what we do or don't do. Our service to Him must be as a response to His love for us, not a means of earning it. But oh how the world's way of thinking creeps in if we're not careful!

How about this one:"My leadership team doesn't recognise me for all the hard work I put in. Why hasn't God prompted them to elevate me to a higher position? Are they not listening to Him?"

Jesus talked often of obedience, and the verse from Micah sums that up. What God desires from us is humble obedience to Him, and that we share His love, mercy and grace with those around us. Not so we gain reward, not as a tit-for-tat bargain.

Though things might be difficult for us at present we have the promise that He will lift us up at the right time. Sometimes there is stuff we must endure - if it's not through our own disobedience, it will be to strengthen and refine us.

We have the promised Holy Spirit within us - the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead! He will never leave us or forsake us, we are not abandoned or unrecognised in His Kingdom. He knows what we need, where we often only know what we want. He is faithful, trustworthy, compassionate, all-seeing, all-knowing, eternally loving.

So let us make sure to check our response to Him.

Have a blessed day. 💖

A Prayer

Jesus

Thank you for overcoming the world. Because of that we can experience unity with you, and because we can be unified with you we can experience unity with eachother - in fact, you command it.

It is by you that all things hold together. As we seek to centre or lives around you, help us to see all the ways you are at work in the world.

Draw us close to your heart so that we begin to see others the way you see them, so that we look out for their interests above our own.

We want your Kingdom to come here on earth as it is in Heaven, so we pray you will unite us in purpose so that nothing prevents people searching for you and believing in you. May we know such unity that the world will know you sent us and that we love them unconditionally, as you do.

Come Lord Jesus and do in our lives what only you can do.

Amen

Become like the one you live with

Do you ever watch people sitting around a table engaged in conversation? Do you notice the way they unconsciously mimic each other’s posture? This is just a minor example of how we become like those with whom we pass the time of day. During our lifetime among family and friends we pick up mannerisms, habits, patterns of speech and ideologies without even knowing.

Jesus said “Abide in me and I will abide in you”. Live with me He says, know my thoughts, pick up my mannerisms, be with me, become like me.

This is more, much more than a daily bible reading (which is, clearly, a good thing to do). It's more than just learning about Jesus so you can imitate him, (though Paul says “Imitate me even as I imitate Christ”). It's more than spending time with other Christians where you can learn how to do church. All these things are good but living with Jesus is so much more. We can practice the behaviour which we know is right as Peter instructs in his 2nd letter, and there is an element of doing it until you become it. But it is the constant presence of the Living God that we need.

To live with Jesus means having God in the person of the Holy Spirit as a constant companion, a friend, always there to talk to, always there to help, guide, comfort, support, encourage, empower, and to correct. Then sometimes we just need to simply BE with him.

On the other hand, Psalm 1:1 reminds us: “Blessed is the one who does not walk with the wicked or stand with sinners or sit in the company of mockers”.

So, brothers and sisters in the Lord, let us decide today who’s company we will keep. Let us decide to live with Jesus – after all, just think what he went through to make it possible.

“May grace and peace cascade over you as you live in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord” (2 Peter 1:2)

Precious Gift of Faith

My thoughts have been taken up recently by studied in Peter's 2nd letter, chapter 1.

It's around 65AD, he's in prison and facing execution for his faith, but still he writes to the Hebrew believers (Paul's mission was to the Gentiles, Peter's more to the Hebrews) about the precious faith given to us as Christians when we come to believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.

Precious faith - a gift from God.

If something is precious we nurture it, care for it, don't let it out of our sight, protect it.

Peter talks about how to do this. He instruct us to make every effort to add goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love - suggesting we add them in a cumulative way, starting with goodness and working through until we get to love.

This all suggests that we can't rely on Agape love (God's sort of love) being a feeling. We can't sit around until we feel like doing the right thing. We can't treat others according to whether or no we like them. We can't expect to know about God unless we study His Word.

Why do we do this? Is there any help or do we sink or swim by our own efforts?

We read in this chapter that:

Everything we could ever need for life and complete devotion to God has already been deposited in us by his divine power. For all this was lavished upon us through the rich experience of knowing him who has called us by name and invited us to come to him through a glorious manifestation of his goodness. As a result of this, he has given you magnificent promises that are beyond all price, so that through the power of these tremendous promises you can experience partnership with the divine nature, by which you have escaped the corrupt desires that are of the world.

But we still must make the effort as Peter says' "Because of all this make every effort..........."

We have a precious faith given to us freely by our incredible, awesome God. Let us not waste it.

I close with the blessing:

May grace and perfect peace cascade over you as you live in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

When you come

When you visit Lord, what will it be like?

When you descend like a flood, will I drown?

When you blow like the wind will I be swept away?

Where is the pattern for what I should do, how I should be?

There is no TV documentary

   No TV soap

      No comic strip

          No one I know

To tell me what to do, how to be.

My life is full of learned behaviours.

Which do I choose when the Lord Almighty visits?

If I choose wrongly will he pass by?

Surely not - he’s bigger than that, more holy…………

So, how will I be afterwards?

Knowing that this shouldn’t matter doesn’t answer the question or quiet my heart.

So what happens now?

Do I pray that that you will come?

When you come all the lies will be revealed ......and I don’t know how much of me is made up of lies.

But I don’t want to miss you

I yearn for you

I long for you........... when I remember you and give you the time…

But how does one stand in awe? How does that happen?

Where does wanting to bow down, lie down, kneel down stop being something that I choose to do and start being something that you make me do?

How much of my reaction will be driven by the human spirit and how much by you?

I know that when you come your nature will be revealed and,  if the greatest thing is love and love is who you are, then love will prevail when you come.

You are the light and light dispels darkness – so the enemy might put up a fight but will not prevail when you come.

You are pure and healing power surrounds you – the sick will be healed when you come.

You created the laws of nature and you are in control of them - you can change things with a mere thought and cause the miraculous to happen when you come.

But I hear of the counterfeit… the unholy… the human emotions… things that are not bowed down to you but, instead, are defying your presence.

I worry that I will be in that crowd and not, genuinely in you.

So, how should I pray?

Do I want you or not?

Do I need you or not?

My heart cries out ………………

 YES LORD COME QUICKLY

Worship

Worship

Worship is what we do because of who we are, wherever we are....... how do we do it?

It comes from deep down, from the depths of our being.

It’s not something we can study, can’t learn the technique.

It’s the required response of the redeemed to the redeemer.

It’s the pull of the heart towards the healer.

It’s a raise of the hands towards the risen Lord, it’s the bow of the head and the bend of the knee to our Creator and Sustainer.

It’s the recognition of the One who flung stars into the space He created, and to the one who lit the sun.

It’s stopping to wonder at the intricacies and at the infinite expanses of creation.

It’s bowing before Him

It’s running to Him

It’s dancing with Him

It’s singing to Him

It’s sitting with Him

It’s saying here I am, all of me, I’ve always been yours from the instant you first thought of my design.

It’s being with the One who has always wanted to be with me.

It’s coming home to the One who made it possible.

Be Bold, Pray Bold

Acts 4:23-31

The Church Prays

As soon as they were released from custody, Peter and John went to the other believers and explained all that had happened with the high priest and the elders. When the believers heard their report, they raised their voices in unity and prayed, “Lord Yahweh, you are the Lord of all! You created the universe—the earth, the sky, the sea, and everything that is in them. And you spoke by the Holy Spirit through your servant David, our forefather, saying:

‘How dare the nations plan a rebellion,
ranting and raging against the Lord Most High?
    Their foolish plots are futile!
Look at how the kings of the earth take their stand,
with the rulers scheming and conspiring together
against God and his anointed Messiah!’

“In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with Jews and non-Jews, met together to take their stand against your holy servant, Jesus the Messiah. They did to him all that your purpose and will had determined, according to the destiny you had marked out for him. So now, Lord, listen to their threats to harm us. Empower us, as your servants, to speak the word of God freely and courageously. Stretch out your hand of power through us to heal, and to move in signs and wonders by the name of your holy Son, Jesus!”

At that moment the earth shook beneath them, causing the building they were in to tremble. Each one of them was filled with the Holy Spirit, and they proclaimed the word of God with unrestrained boldness.

I have just listened to a sermon on this, delivered by Alastair Begg, found on the Truth for Life app (which I highly recommend if you prefer a voice from the UK rather than the US).

It occurs to me that often we pray for protection, freedom from persecution, comfort, basically a nice life! Is that why the church has become soft in so many ways? If we take the example of these early disciples who had just been released from prison, we should be praying for more boldness to preach the word of God - and hang the consequences!

I have to challenge myself to repeat their prayer, and encourage you to do the same:

"Empower us, as your servants, to speak the word of God freely and courageously. Stretch out your hand of power through us to heal, and to move in signs and wonders by the name of your holy Son, Jesus!”

Then can we expect the room to shake as the Holy Spirit at last has the freedom to fill us and work with us to proclaim the word of God with unrestrained boldness?

I am a child of God!!!

NO LONGER A SLAVE, I AM A CHILD OF GOD

My daily devotional asked the question, "Who are you?"

The answer might seem simple at first thought but many of our responses only describe what we do, not who we are. So we might be so-and-so's wife/husband/child/parent; we might say our profession; we might even say what racial-type or skin-colour we are, or we might say what we're good at such as building, baking, mending, singing, writing etc, etc, etc . If we're a christian, we might even say proudly declare "I am a child of God". But even this has it's problems (stick with me on this one).

What does it mean to be a child of God?

Paul describes it well in Ephesians 1- see it here from the Passion Translation

May God himself, the heavenly Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, release grace over you and impart total well-being into your lives.

Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus—all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts!  And he chose us to be his very own, joining us to himself even before he laid the foundation of the universe! Because of his great love, he ordained us, so that we would be seen as holy in his eyes with an unstained innocence.

For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over us would glorify his grace —for the same love he has for his Beloved One, Jesus, he has for us. And this unfolding plan brings him great pleasure!

Since we are now joined to Christ, we have been given the treasures of redemption by his blood—the total cancellation of our sins—all because of the cascading riches of his grace. This superabundant grace is already powerfully working in us, releasing within us all forms of wisdom and practical understanding. And through the revelation of the Anointed One, he unveiled his secret desires to us—the hidden mystery of his long-range plan, which he was delighted to implement from the very beginning of time. And because of God’s unfailing purpose, this detailed plan will reign supreme through every period of time until the fulfillment of all the ages finally reaches its climax—when God makes all things new in all of heaven and earth through Jesus Christ.

Doesn't that just make you tingle all over?

Since before time began God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) decided that He wanted me/you to be His beloved child and put into place an eternal plan to make it happen so that we can be together for all eternity.

But out of love He gives us the choice. Can you believe that? He loves us individually so much that He doesn't force us to choose Him!

All I can say is "Father, I choose you and thank you Jesus that you made this possible, and thank you Holy Spirit for drawing me close and sticking by me despite all my failings. I can hardly wait to meet you in person".

In closing, if you've not yet caught the excitement, try listening to this song - it might not be your normal choice of musical style (it gets a bit shouty), but it's worth a listen.

Never alone

 Never Alone

I like to have the radio on in the car when I'm driving and today I flicked on to Radio 2 because the usual Radio 4 was annoying. A song was played which was really pretty awful but the lyrics stood out. It was one of those songs with a very restricted melody, yelled out by some diva, and with few words. However, the words made me think.

The gist of the lyrics was something like: when it all goes wrong and my friends abandon me, it will be OK because you're there by my side.

How wonderful it must be to have a relationship with someone strong in whom you can trust so absolutely!

Well, of course, Christians have just such a friend in Jesus.

Deuteronomy 3:16 says this:

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

I have some fantastic, wise, good, strong friends but they are all human. Instead, I know where I will look when things get tough - I will look to the my Creator, Sustainer, Counselor, Saviour, the Only One who gave His life as a sacrifice so I could be with Him for eternity, the One in whose love and faithfulness I can absolutely trust, even if I can't see a reason for the situation I'm in.

Every Blessing

It's all about Jesus

A long, long time ago, when I was in my late teens and a new Christian, there was a song we used to sing where the first line was "May I introduce you to a friend?"

This was a bit revolutionary as we were emerging from a time of church and faith being all about knowing the scriptures and behaving according to the rules - many of them invented by the church leaders. Does that sound familiar?

Matthew 10:39 says this:

"All who seek to live apart from me will lose it all. But those who let go of their lives for my sake and surrender it all to me will discover true life!"

This was my verse for today in the Bible app and I immediately thought of that old song, though I can't remember the rest of the words. "Let me introduce you to a friend" is what we need to be saying to those who don't know our incredible Lord and Saviour.

We probably all know people who have tried Christianity and found it doesn't work for them - but have they actually met Jesus?

I am aware that there are some who meet Him and find that their love for the world overcomes all else and they walk away, but there are others who might have only ever been introduced to an ideological sort of good-lifestyle type of Christianity which can never work. Where does it talk about people having the form of faith but lacking the power therof? Fallen nature and the enemy of our souls will always win against a watered-down, do-good, be-nice type of Christianity.

It has to be all about Jesus and we need to be introducing our friends and neighbours to this Friend above all Friends and then they will be able to make a real choice.

Then we will be able to join in with Paul, Silas and Timothy: 1 Thessalonians 1

Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:Grace and peace to you.

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia – your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead – Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Be Blessed

Friends

"Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken".

Friendship is so very important. We all need friends to stand alongside, to laugh with, to cry with, to pray with, to share our deepest thoughts, to hold us accountable, to correct us. We don't need the sort of friends who only massage our egos!

So my questions to me today are:
  • Am I being a good friend to those whom God has brought me alongside?
  • Do I look only for friends who are like me?
  • Am I honest and open with those who I would call my friends?
  • Do I welcome both positive and negative input from my friends?
  • Do I make enough effort to keep in touch?
Of course this all, also applies to our friendship with God who is the best friend we will ever have.

In 1 Cor 16:13-14 Paul gives these final words to the friends in his letter:

Remember to stay alert and hold firmly to all that you believe. Be mighty and full of courage. Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do.

We have a choice whether or not to pursue our friendship, our relationship with our friends and with God. These verses remind us that it takes effort on our part.

And finally, love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.

Welcome to my blog

Welcome to my blog

Isaiah 40:31

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

I rejoice at the truth of these words and, indeed, this verse has seen me through many trials of life (many of them of my own making!).

This blog follows on from an earlier one called "While I was running" - where big thoughts about God were posted. The title came from The Apostle Paul's discussions about running the race (the Christian Life) to completion. While I was out running this morning I heard that small inner voice saying "Why be content with running? What about flying?" - which reminded me of this verse.

In our contemporary Western, 1st World Society the culture is such that we are taught to seek out those things which benefit, amuse, comfort, and enrich us. We are encouraged to seek out the perfect lifestyle for us, this to include where we live, how we dress, the career we pursue, the activities for the children (plus necessary accessories), holiday destinations, garden design...............etc etc etc. We pursue our comfort.

It is all too easy to come to our Christian life with the same expectations and expect God to have the same view. So when it doesn't go our way and things get difficult through whatever cause it can be all to easy to ask why. We pray for our comfort to return because we think it's our prerogative.

So why have Christians through the ages suffered so much persecution? Does God not care about our comfort and peace of mind?

James has an intriguing and, some may think, puzzling answer.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds

Which brings us back to trusting in the Lord, whatever and whenever things get tough (and all the rest of the time as well). He's building character and perseverance. He's developing your innate, God-given gifts for use in His Kingdom, He's demonstrating His sovereignty. He will show you that peace is not the absence of war, it's the presence of God, Prince of Peace. He will show you that joy is not mere happiness, it's the very presence of our joyful God. He will show you that love is not a feeling but a choice, and one which He himself will empower by His presence.

In conclusion for now - let us trust in the Lord and fly, run, walk with Him, according to His perfect plan for us.

Every blessing
